Vanity: Anything Negative About Joining the Peace Corps?

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

There are many websites that promote joining the Peace Corps. A family member has asked me to research the subject and help her reach a decision about joining. I have found only a few sites with cautionary comments. I would like FReepers to help me balance the information with any negative feedback available.

EDITORIAL: Obama team honors Walpin-gate transgressor

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

Only in the Obama administration would a public official sanctioned for a form of malfeasance be honored as a speaker by the same organization that sanctioned him. It helps, of course, when he is a self-proclaimed Friend of the First Couple. It also doesn't hurt that the administration already found it politically convenient to fire the inspector general, Gerald Walpin, who blew the whistle on his misdeeds.Still, the public should consider it a brazen affront for this administration to feature Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson as a key speaker at a major conference sponsored later this month by the Corporation for...

How can I help?

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

As Obama and Pelosi assault the center-right citizenry, even folks with a casual interests politics are asking what they can do to change the course of this government. I've got some ideas and I'm looking to join or start a group on the internet that help organize and this energy. Many of the things to be done involve a bit of internet effort, similar to FREEP THIS POLL. I'm not looking for any money -- anyone who wants to donate already knows how to do that. This will be for people who would like to give their time.

Are days numbered for “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day”?

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

Indications show that the “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” promotion, which encouraged volunteerism with the prospect of free admission to a Disney theme park, is coming to an end. Last month, the company boasted that it had amassed more than 600,000 volunteers in the first six weeks of the program, which began Jan. 1, 2010. “We have been overwhelmed by the response,” said Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. When the program was annouced to the public last fall, Disney said it would distribute tickets to the first 1 million to complete their service. At...

A financial shortfall leads to a 'only me' attitude by the community

As reported here over the last few weeks, Huntington has been facing a shortfall of over a million dollars in tax revenue. Mayor Updike has tried to acquire a trash fee, has laid of a minimum of 12 people (including 6 fire fighters), closed one fire station and gotten a lot of bad reactions. The city employees have tried to help. City employees volunteered their time to decorate the city with Christmas cheer, only to find that the city has to pay overtime. The reason, a labor law states that a worker can not do anything while off duty that...

How to win voters over to your side no matter where you are running

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

here are people will vote for you no matter what. They don’t care what your positions are on any issue, nor do they care about your ability to perform, the content of your latest speech or how effective your campaign is. While campaign professionals like to refer to this group as “committed supports,” they are more commonly referred to in layman’s terms as “your parents.” By contrast, some people will never vote for you no matter what you do and in spite of your positions on vital issues or your qualifications. Some would cynically say that those are called “in-laws”,...

Land swap, prisoner volunteer work proposal on New York ballot

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

Currently, the constitution allows prisoners to perform work for governmental agencies during their prison sentence, but the amendment would allow them to volunteer for religious, charitable and educational groups as well. Letting inmates work for non-profits was common practice for jails across the state until the state Commission of Correction determined it was unconstitutional about three years ago, state Sheriffs' Association Counsel Thomas Mitchell said. The nonprofit work could be used as an incentive for good behavior.

Obama's Volunteer Initiative Is Economically Bankrupt

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

Responding to the almost monolithically positive coverage of the Obama administration by the national press, Phil Bronstein, editor-at-large for the Hearst Newspapers, observed recently that the Administration and the reporters covering it should "get a room." And while USA Today's account of Barack and Michelle Obama's "United We Serve" initiative appeared after Bronstein's quip, its coverage of same serves as yet another example of a media apparently unwilling to show even the remotest amount of skepticism about an Administration and program that deserve a great deal of it. As USA Today's Andrea Stone wrote, "First Lady Michelle Obama will launch...

Naval grazing - volunteers serve up homey hospitality for US sailors on shore leave

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

When the American minesweepers USS Patriot and USS Guardian docked in Hong Kong on Monday, Wan Chai's bars and clubs heaved with off-duty sailors who hadn't been allowed booze for weeks. But many American servicemen find alternative ways to spend their shore leave here. Although scores of their colleagues spill into the tawdry traps of Lockhart Road, petty officer first class Jason Davis and some of his shipmates from the guided-missile destroyer USS Chafee prefer home cooking with mainly compatriot host families in Hong Kong. "Carousing and staying up all night ... that's not me any more. It's too crazy...

Youth volunteering dips, first time since 9/11

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

CHICAGO – Volunteering has helped define a generation of young Americans who are known for their do-gooder ways. Many high schools require community service before graduation. And these days, donating time to a charitable organization is all but expected on a young person's college or job application. Even so, an analysis of federal data has found that the percentage of teens who volunteer dipped in recent years, ending an upward trend that began after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. "They're still volunteering at higher rates than their parents did," says Peter Levine, director of Tufts University's Center for...

Democrats Kill Provision in AmeriCorps Bill that Would Keep Funds from ACORN

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

Sen. David Vitter (R-Louisiana) tried to stand up for civil society and taxpayers last week but his effort was shot down by liberal Democratic senators.Vitter tried to prevent the radical direct-action group, ACORN, and its affiliates from benefitting under the odious national service legislation known as the (proposed) GIVE Act. The bill itself, which received a glowing review from John Podesta's pro-Obama propaganda factory, the Center for American Progress, would give government money to volunteer programs and would dramatically expand the feel-good liberal program, AmeriCorps, which ACORN and other groups have used to promote their own political objectives.Vitter's amendment to the bill known...

The Increasingly Shocking Parallels Between Obama And Hitler Youth

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

I came across a video that left me shaking with fear and outrage: If this footage doesn't disturb you to your very core, I don't even know what to say. We have here a militarized group of young men being steeped in not only political ideology, but in literal cult worship of Barack Obama. This was going on before the election. I still remember the video featuring a glassy-eyed girl singing, “We’re gonna spread happiness! We’re gonna spread freeeeedom! Obama’s gonna change it, Obama’s gonna lead ‘em…” The cult mindset continued into his inauguration, with a creepy "Kids' Inaugural." That...

H.R. 1388 passed by the Senate - 26 March 2009 — Serve America

Monday 6th of September 2010 06:38:47 AM
Posted by admin / Under Volunteer Travel

Interestingly enough an important amendment brought to the floor today was not in the H.R. 1388 when it passed the Senate today. The first presented by Sen Vitter (LA) wanted to insure that no money be made available to ACORN and its affiliates, on the grounds that it is a organization with possibly suspect behaviour and that including it in the bill would not be able to politicize charitable giving and activities. Saying that the bill doesn’t allow politicized does not necessarily protect the country from ACORN’s “so-called” charitable activities. ACORN has already received considerable funding from the government, for...
